Free Live Meeting account for every User Group Leader

URL : http://apac.ineta.org/Newsletter/English/March2008/tabid/325/Default.aspx

We are delighted to be able to announce that in collaboration with Microsoft, INETA APAC is able to offer a free LiveMeeting account to every User Group Leader. We hope that this will prove to be invaluable to you in helping you to run successful meetings, especially when it is not possible to get all of your members to attend the same location at the same time.

This account will provided to you specifically for use within your user group and for the benefit of your user group. Once given your account, you will be provided with a user name and password which you must keep confidential. Only you as the user group leader will be able to schedule meetings, although of course any of your members will be able to join and even run them once set up. Please note that although you will receive a LiveMeeting account with its many benefits, you will not be provided with a telephone conferencing facility - you may use your own if you have one, and LiveMeeting has the ability to provide audio conferencing through any PC which has a speaker and microphone.

Some of the many advantages that you LiveMeeting account will provide include:-

  • The ability to share both audio and video with anyone connected to the internet who has the LiveMeeting client software (a free download) installed.
  • The ability to present both Powerpoint presentations and anything on your desktop to the meeting attendees.
  • The ability to collaborate on documents and other content.
  • The ability to record presentations and events and make them available for review at a later date and time.

  • You can find out much more about LiveMeeting by going to http://www.livemeeting.com.

In order to provide with your LiveMeeting account, you will need to send the following information to apac.admin@ineta.org, which will in turn be provided to Microsoft so that the account can be created. Microsoft will keep this information confidential and will not use it to contact you.

Social Bookmarking on MSDN and TechNet: A Collaboration Tool

Microsoft is opening up the MSDN, TechNet, and Expression sites to the worldwide technical community. Social bookmarking is an important element of the overall vision, enabling technical professionals to easily share their web favorites, find and connect with each other, and publish community-generated content directly to our sites.

In May, we released a preview of our social bookmarking application. Today, we released v1.0 of social bookmarking for MSDN, TechNet, and Expression. Chris Slemp has a blog post going into details of the features in this release, and includes some How-To videos for getting started.

Your user group could get value from bookmarking in a couple different ways:

  • Develop a list of resources for technical pros in your area. Use the “boston” tag to bookmark great tech bloggers in the Boston area, UG sites, area vendors, and/or projects.
  • Build sets of resources on a topic of recent interest to the group:
  • An event (e.g. “codecamp”)
  • A very specific technology (e.g. “regularexpressions” or “ipv6”)
  • A broader technology topic, broken down into smaller categories using tags (“sql + explore”, “sql + deploy”, “sql + manage”)

  • Here's an example from a group in Australia who's just started tagging content for their geographically-dispersed team: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/en-US/#sort=all&page=0&filter=allcontent&tags=cscperth
If you'd like to start a tagging project in your user group or in your company/team, and would like to share your experience, please leave a post in the Bookmarking forum. The team is collecting case studies to better understand how groups would like to use bookmarking and to inform requirements for future features such as the ability to define groups (user groups?!) on the MSDN and TechNet sites
