I’m happy to confirm that we’ve had good success with the new Community Launch program, excluding Japan where a separate community launch program is being worked on, we have approximately 80% of our member groups who are participating in the Community launch programs. I’m glad to see such a high participation in the program.
We have a new APAC Admin & Coordinator Sheeba Joel who has assisted in following up with member groups to ensure participation in the program.
The Community Launch program in Japan was kicked off via a meeting organized by Microsoft on Nov 5th. Colt Kwong and Sanjay Shetty participated at this event. There was an INETA Japan meeting which also took place. Look for exciting updates in the next issue of the newsletter.
Volunteers Needed: We are looking for several volunteers to assist in the Membership, Marketing & Sponsorship, and Speaker Committee. If you have time and are interested please contact vinod.kumar@ineta.org
Post our Malaysia Summit, to better streamline our various activities we’re seeking volunteers who can assist in helping us define better processes across our various committees. We are also looking for ideas on how to make the December issue a special Christmas issue. For example, if the usergroups in your country are organizing any special events during the Christmas season, do us a note.

ASP.Net 2.0 Workshops

A 2 day ASP.Net 2.0 Workshop was organized at BVM college on 28th and 29th Sept 2006.
In addition, another ASP.Net 2.0 workshop was held at GCET on 15th and 16th Sept 2006.

Acad Devcon

Im Ahmad AbdulLateef (Chennai Microsoft student partner ) and his team which consists of student partners successfuly conducted Acad DevCon on 25th September 25th. The event was sponsored by Microsoft.
During Acad DevCon, a series of interesting topics such as Microsoft Live, MS Robotics Studio, Web 2.0 and Vista were covered. The event was well-attended by a crowd of more than 1000.

- SGDOTNET
SGDOTNET held its 29th usergroup meeting on 5th October 2006 from 6:30pm to 8:45pm at Microsoft Singapore Auditorium. In the 1st presentation, Edwin Sarmiento shared with the members the tricks in customizing the Login Control in ASP.NET 2.0. Next, SourceCode representatives (Samuel Koh & Johnny Fang) gave members a sneak preview of the next generation of K2.Net, code named BlackPearl.
SGDOTNET.Students (Student chapter of SGDOTNET)
SGDOTNET.Students held its 3rd usergroup meeting on 14th October 2006 morning at Singapore Polytechnic, MLT12. Stanley Tan (Academic Program Manager, Microsoft Singapore) shared with students on the Microsoft Singapore Academic Programs. In addition, Stanley gave a sneak peak to some of the latest Microsoft technologies. Following up, Maung Maung (MVP Security) gave an insightful presentation on developing Windows Vista Sidebar Gadgets. In the last presentation, Wee Hyong shared with the students how they can make use of Windows Workflow Foundation (WF) in their school projects.
.Net Best of Best Challenge (BOB)
The .Net Best of Best Challenge consists of six challenges (released monthly). In each of these challenges, the contestant would make use of either C# or VB.Net to solve the problems. Each month, the contestant with the highest scores will be awarded the Month Champion, and will be featured on the .Net Best of Best Hall of Fame.
The Singapore Dot Net group BOB competition (.Net Best of Best) held its final BOB challenge in Sept. A total of 20 participants participated in the competition over a span of six months. After an intense fight between 2 frequent month champions (Ngyuen Thi Duong and Lucas Tan), the BOB grand champion title was given to Lucas Tan. He won for himself a XBOX 360, which will be presented to him during the Developer Conference for Students (DevCon), to be held on 16 December, in Singapore. The XBOX 360 is kindly sponsored by Microsoft Singapore.

1. When did you join INETA APAC?
In 2002
2. What is the role played by the Academic committee within INETA APAC?
The INETA Academic Committee is focused on helping support .NET technologies in academia. We accomplish this by providing support and assistance through our local INETA user groups to students and faculty. We support the creation and on-going growth of student user groups and .NET education in academia. By leveraging the resources of INETA, we provide a connection to local professional .NET developers: for community building, mentoring and technical advice.
INETA Academic provides:
- Periodic seminars and workshops on relevant technologies, conducted either in your college or at an alternate venue. INETA will take the responsibility of providing experienced and qualified speakers and also the content and resources for the same.
- The INETA Speaker bureau – The speaker bureau is a databank of some of the most eminent and best speakers available in India. Being part of an INETA supported User group gives you the chance of coming face to face with some of the most respected gurus in the world.
- Local technology champions - are you stuck on a .NET problem? Need help on a class project? Thru INETA you can have access to local MVPs (Microsoft’s Most Valuable Professionals) and Community Stars.
- Access to evaluation software’s, starter kits and an e-book specially created for students.
- Mentor groups - through the INETA.org web site, you can find .NET user groups in your area that can help you with presentation topics, .NET resources, and mentoring assistance in establishing and running your own INETA Academic user group
- Discounts and schemes from affiliated institutes to students wishing to take up .NET courses. (wherever applicable)
- Books, magazines, software, t-shirts and other goodies.
3. How can users groups specifically take advantage of the Academic committee, could you give a recent example?
In the last month, INETA volunteers conducted a workshop in the Indian state of Gujarat for members of a user groups called dotnetchaps. The event helped to increase the awareness of the concept of usergroups amongst new students. The membership of the usergroup increased by 25% overnight. The event also gave some of the senior students to get the problems that they were facing in their final year projects to be solved. And best of all it gave the students a chance to get knowledge from an industry recognized expert, something that they would not normally get a chance of.
4. What new initiative is your committee doing to help user groups grow?
We are trying to organize more such workshops for the benefit of students. Last year we organized 2 devcon events in India. Going forward we plan to organize more events like these not only in India, but all the other countries in APAC. We are currently streamlining our processes and trying to work more efficiently. We are going to try and increase our volunteer base and appoint country heads.
We also plan to organize 2 more BOB challenge competitions in the next one year, like the one that was recently held in Singapore. Finally to recognize the contribution and efforts of our volunteers and the academic institutions that lend us support, we will initiate a volunteer recognition program.
